United Kingdom Alumni Meet 14th Nov 2009

Dear all,

Thank you so much for your every effort to make to first ever IET Alumni meet in UK. Meet saw a presence of 10 distinguished alumni ( I have excluded myself from distinguished list as I have miles to go make my presence felt), in total 11.

Thanks a ton to all who finally made to meet.

Weather was terrible but excitement surmounted everything and we saw alumnus Amit Goel (2001 Batch) coming from as distant as Newcastle (almost 300 miles from London). This was heartening to see Shuchi Ma'am from 1989 batch (Second batch of IET), Gunjan Ghai Sir (1995 Batch, IET alumni UK chapter head), Maneesh Rastogi Sir (1995 Batch), Nalin Varshney Sir (1998 Batch),Aviral Mittal Sir (1998 Batch), Dhiraj Sinha Sir (1999 Batch), Trivender Singh Sir (1999 Batch), Ojaswa Sharma Sir (2001 Batch) and Meraz Zia Sir (2004 Batch).

Meet started at 1200 Hrs, everyone gathered at Chutney restaurant in Central London (Near Euston Square Station) and as expected after an informal round of introduction everyone started with college memories, talking about college, departments, HODs, Professors, lecturers, Girls Hostel, Boys hostels (Blocks), strike, papers, etc etc a long list to go....

While we were waiting for everyone to join us Maneesh sir ordered drinks and with chuski of Chai and coffee, gulp of coke and lemonade discussion took speed..and then as time demanded we went for lunch, I personally liked the food, would like to hear from others who joined us there...

Ojaswa Sir and Shuchi Ma'am left for their planned appointments and so is Meraz sir and then we moved to "Crown and Anchor" Bar, there were lots of healthy discussions about college (Don't think that healthy discussions can't happen in a BAR :)) Somehow message arose that the institute is not so well known and this gives its students inferiority complex which results in lack of confidence among students so there was a strong need to improve college's brand image and then discussion was how alumni can contribute in this noble cause and all present felt that college's brand image and confidence among college's students about their calibre and opportunities need to boosted and this can be done by number of ways, few agreed were

1) We need to collect and publish a list of distinguished alumni which will give immense confidence about what college produces and students will get to know how well their alumni are doing across the globe.

2) Everyone felt that alumni should come forward for mentoring students, provide assistance and opportunities wherever possible.

3) All also felt that providing assistance and opportunities to third year students for their summer training/internship will boost their confidence when they get to work or get to know how things work in globally recognised institutions/organisations and to start with We request every alumni capable of hiring two-three students for summer internship in their respective organisation to do so (If they can arrange some stipend then it is too good otherwise students are willing to do internship without any stipend and they are ready to bear all the expenses like fooding/lodging etc) - All willing can post their plans on alumni website http://www.ietalumni.org/ and this will go to alumni notice board in college...

4) The above will add lots of value to their resume as well and so it will lead to great placement.

5) Chapter also requests alumni visiting Lucknow to spend sometime with college students in mentoring them and providing career counselling.

By this time Nalin Sir, Aviral Sir and Trivender Sir had left the bar but five (Gunjan Sir, Maneesh Sir, Dhiraj Sir , Amit Sir and I ) were still there... After a round of brainstorming topic about college there were discussions about INDIA, UP, Lucknow its politics and much more...During discussion we came to know more about Dhiraj Sir and everyone was spellbound when we came to know about his research in micro antenna and his pragmatic business plan. There is a lot more to say but I have to cut it short ;

This was already past 7 PM and still everyone was enjoying so much talking about college ki baatein...and this brought forth few incidents about some successful and some not so successful proposal attempts on valentine day in college.

I have to sign it off as it has become too long but definitely still there is too much to write about and surely who were not able to make to the event missed a lot of fun....but they need not to worry as we will plan another meet within next three months.:)

I was told to create a group (yahoo or orkut or facebook) for IET UK alumni so that new comers can easily reach alumni @ UK and people here remain in touch but I believe we should use IET alumni website for this purpose as there is dedicated forum for alumni and there is a corner for UK chapter as well.

I request everyone to visit the site once a week at least and you will come to know about the various events related to college; I also request to all who have not registered yet please must register at http://www.ietalumni.org/ . Every month a newsletter is sent to all the registered alumni and next month will have dedicated column about this meet, meet in Mumbai and also a picnic party in USA.

Once again thanks a ton. I request you all to provide your feedback about the event.

I also request you to please mail me or post on http://www.ietalumni.org/ forum about any ideas which can help college and its students.

This year college placement progress is not so good so please come forward if you can help in this regard

. I have attached few snaps of meet ( I am really sorry for very less number of snaps as meet kept me so busy I forgot to take more pics)

In nutshell meet was a great fun and I really look forward for such events to happen again and again...your thoughts are invited.. what say??

Best Regards,

HariOm Agrawal (EC - 2006)
